VOTE FOR PEROT IS A VOTE AGAINST THE STATUS QUO.(PERSPECTIVE)

Byline: JEFFREY A. BELL TROY This letter via e-mail

Imagine Fred the Wonder Horse ran for president and received 20 percent of the vote. Imagine if he actually won a state! Do you think that might get noticed? That, in a nutshell, is what your Sunday (8/25) editorial missed when you wrote that Ross Perot serves no purpose on the ballot.

In absence of Fred, Ross Perot is a wonderful candidate. A vote for Perot is a clear and emphatic statement of …

American Axle ends string of losses with 3Q profit

American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. posted its first quarterly profit in two years on Friday, an encouraging sign after deep and painful cost cuts at the struggling auto parts supplier. Its shares jumped 7 percent in morning trading.

"We believe the third quarter of 2009 marks a positive turning point" for the company, CEO Richard E. Dauch said in a statement.

The profit was largely based on a one-time gain from pension and post-retirement benefit curtailments, which totaled $42.3 million during the quarter. The company continued to take charges due to salaried attrition programs and other restructuring costs.

The parts …

Selecting Risks in an Anonymous World: The Agency System for Life Insurance in Antebellum America

Early American life insurers found themselves facing the problem of asymmetric information, as they needed to rely on applicants themselves to provide truthful, complete answers to a standard set of questions. In an attempt to repersonalize the relationship between their boards of directors and the individual applicants, firms selected highly respected local citizens to act as their agents. These agents were expected to evaluate the appearance of candidates, unearth evidence of unhealthy family histories or questionable habits, and attest to the respectability of people writing testimonial letters on an applicant's behalf. In short, the initial purpose of the agency system was not to …

Byline: Jamie LaReau

When General Motors submits its viability plan to Congress next month, it will outline what its future U.S. market share will need to be with just four core brands.

GM plans eventually to go to market with just the four core brands: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC. Pontiac will shrink "significantly, GM COO Fritz Henderson said.

Saturn, Saab and Hummer are under strategic review.

Speaking last week at the Automotive News World Congress, Henderson said GM is finalizing the viability plan it must submit to Congress on Feb. 17. It is looking at industry volume assumptions and pricing to determine what market share GM will need …

NO OPPRESSION IN HAITI, CIA SAYS.(MAIN)

Byline: Knight-Ridder

At a time when human rights monitors charged the Haitian military was terrorizing its people last year, a senior CIA analyst visited the country and reported "there is no systematic or frequent" murder of civilians.

In a classified CIA memo obtained by the Miami Herald, the analyst said he saw "no evidence of oppressive rule" in Haiti 10 months after President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was ousted in a bloody coup.

Brian Latell, the national intelligence officer for Latin America, effusively praised military-backed Prime Minister Marc Bazin and military chief Lt. Gen. Raoul Cedras in the memo, dated July 21, 1992.

Obama cautiously hopeful as Mideast talks begin

President Barack Obama convened the first direct Israeli-Palestinian talks in two years Wednesday, challenging Mideast leaders to seize a fleeting opportunity to settle their differences and deliver peace to a region haunted by decades of hostility.

"I am hopeful, cautiously hopeful, but hopeful," Obama said with the leaders of Jordan, Egypt, Israel and the Palestinians beside him in the crowded East Room of the White House. Earlier Obama had met with each individually, and they gathered afterward for dinner.

Shadowed by fresh violence in the region, the leaders solemnly commenced the talks aimed at creating a sovereign Palestinian state beside a …
